Thanks for this post! I'm a male massage therapist working in the South, and I can tell you that being male here is more difficult than perhaps in a more enlightened area of the country. I'm extraordinarily well educated in my field, an excellent therapist, and a good public speaker and licensed teacher. I cannot tell you how many times in my 10-year career I've heard over the telephone, "I'd prefer a female therapist". I have also heard the opposite, but those calls are very few and far between.

I don't use it as an excuse; however it is a very, very real phenomenon.

I was just commenting on indeed.com massage (http://tinyurl.com/aj6ff3) therapists section on just this topic. Guys have a hard time being the minority.

I can't tell you the number of times I have heard guys asking 'Do you want a female therapist?' rather than just saying I have an opening at this time.

I personally am in a stage preferring male therapists and think that there is some tremendous healing that goes on in a therapeutic setting with males being a massage therapist. We need more males and more educating the public!

Nice post. I am a male MT that graduated from NHI in 1998. I wrote a series on some of the challenges of being a male MT in my blog (http://massage-continuum.blogspot.com/). I get annoyed with people using gender as an excuse for their lack of success. It can be an issue sometimes, yes, but it isn't the biggest one!
